چکیده

In this paper we discuss an application of CMOS photo-sensor array chip using pulse frequency modulation (PFM) to sub-retinal implantation to recover human vision. PFM with integration mode as photo-sensing circuit is used to realize enough dynamic range and compatibility with signals in real retina. To effectively stimulate the retinal cells, we have designed a PFM circuit with limited bandwidth of output pulses and two kinds of pulse shaping circuits with digital waveform memory and pixel-level output amplitude tuner. We have fabricated a PFM photo-sensing test circuits with a standard 0.35 μm CMOS technology to measure its basic characteristics, and have demonstrated a large dynamic range of around 40 dB.

An image sensor based on pulse frequency modulation for retinal prosthesis

We demonstrate an application of a CMOS image sensor using pulse frequency modulation for retinal prosthesis. To increase the sensitivity we use a pulse frequency modulation (PFM) instead of a conventional integration method. The fundamental device characteristics of PFM are described. Based on the results of the PFM pixel circuit, we have fabricated a 128 x 128 pixel array chip using 0.35μm CM...

Proposal of Application of Pulsed Vision Chip to Retinal Prosthesis

In this paper, we propose and discuss an application of a CMOS vision chip using pulse frequency modulation to sub-retinal implantation to partially recover human vision. In sub-retinal approaches, a photo-sensor buried underneath the retina converts light distribution of the image projected on a retina surface to electric signals, and stimulates the horizontal cells or neurons behind them [1],...

A CMOS vision chip using modified Pulse-Frequency-Modulation (PFM) as an implanted retinal prosthesis device under the subretinal space

We propose a CMOS vision chip, an image sensor with pixel-level signal processing, to serve as a replacement for degenerated photoreceptor cells in the retina. In our approach, a vision chip is implanted underneath the retina (the subretinal space). For efficient electric stimulation, we utilize a pulse frequency modulation (PFM). Each pixel consists of a photosensor and a signal processor. Eac...

Electrically-evoked Neural Activities of rd1 Mice Retinal Ganglion Cells by Repetitive Pulse Stimulation.

For successful visual perception by visual prosthesis using electrical stimulation, it is essential to develop an effective stimulation strategy based on understanding of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) responses to electrical stimulation. We studied RGC responses to repetitive electrical stimulation pulses to develop a stimulation strategy using stimulation pulse frequency modulation. Retinal patc...
